Kia ora Waterlea Whaanau
As we come to the end of Term 3, I think we can all agree it has been a fun action packed and learning filled 10 weeks.
Yesterday, the school was filled with kaiako and whaanau cheering on their Year 3 – 6 tamariki participating in school cross country events and what well organised events they were. In order for things like this to happen at school, lots of pre-planning goes in beforehand and behind the scenes. Waterlea staff create an amazing team involving kaiako, kaiaawhina, Eric, our fabulous caretaker and the office team fielding lots of calls, emails and overseeing the sickbay – everyone working together to ensure such events are safe and fun for our tamariki. Thanks to our whaanau who always come along to support us. Please check out the cross country places for Year 4-6 below.
Thank you to all whaanau who filled out the surveys for the school board – it was greatly appreciated. The information you have given will help set the direction for Waterlea for the next 2 years.
Just a reminder to join us at our MANA Assembly this Friday at the earlier time of 9.30am. We have a couple of very special presentations including our MANA Values Korowai being presented to a student in the Middle School. We are also thanking our friends from Amici Trust and Pform.nz who made the Moana Jr. musical possible.
Also don’t forget we have school photos tomorrow!

Our attendance rate as a school for the tenth week for Term 3 is at 58%. As a comparison, our 2025 whole school attendance rate for Term 3 was 51%.
As always, please remember to let the office know if your child is going to be away and the reason for the absence. This information will allow us to enter the correct attendance code for your child. You can phone the office on 096364233 or email reception@waterlea.school.nz.
If your child is going away during the school term please email principal@waterlea.school.nz with the details for the absence and the dates your child will be away.

Waterlea is really lucky to have a community nurse called Farisha who will be working in our school every Monday morning. She will be able to provide advice and care for lots of those itchy, scratchy, raspy, drippy childhood issues that affect our tamariki, without you needing to take a morning off work to book a visit to the health centre!
The kind of things that Farisha can help with are things like school sores or scabies, repeated head lice, ongoing coughs and runny noses. You are welcome to get in touch with the teacher if you would like to self refer, and Farisha will always contact parents before seeing a child.

After the school holidays, in the first week of Term 4, we will be holding our Student Led Conferences (SLC). You will remember that we held Teacher Led Conferences at the beginning of Term 3 and this time we involve our tamariki in the learning conversations. The date for SLC is Thursday 15 October and tamariki will go home at 1pm so we can start the conferences at 1:30pm.
SLC is an opportunity for students to lead a conversation about their learning at Waterlea. Each SLC lasts for 25 minutes and the teacher will also be available to answer questions during this time. The SLC starts at 2:00pm and finishes at 7:10pm and there will be 3 – 4 conferences happening at the same time within each classroom.
If English is not the language used in your home we invite you to conduct your child’s conference in the language with which you feel most comfortable.

South Auckland Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon
The South Auckland Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon will be held on Tuesday 24 November at Mountford Park, Manurewa. Our school has registered for this event, but please note that parents are responsible for entering their child and supporting them with training. It’s a fantastic opportunity for tamariki to give it a go, build confidence, and have fun being active! We will have the school marquee set up so athletes have a central meeting place and can support each other.

Entry Options
- Splash & Dash – 6 year olds only. Swim and run.
- Individual TRYathlete – 7-15 year olds. Swim, cycle and run.
- Teams of Two – 7-9 year olds (Juniors) and 10-15 year olds (Seniors). One team member does the swim, the other does the cycle, and both do the run.
