Kia ora Waterlea Whaanau
Welcome to Te Wiki o Te Reo Maaori, Maaori Language Week and this year’s theme being Te Reo Towns. The theme celebrates the communities that have helped keep te reo Maaori alive and thriving, while highlighting the role we all play in supporting and strengthening the language through everyday use.
From our homes and workplaces to libraries, community spaces, and right here at Waterlea, small actions can make a meaningful difference. Whether it’s learning a new kupu, using a greeting in te reo Maaori, or sharing knowledge with others, each step helps ensure te reo Maaori continues to be seen, heard and valued. Have fun this week and get your selves and whaanau some te reo Maaori goals.
We are well into Musical mode this week and we held our first performance of Moana Jr. last night – WOW, what a great show! We have some shout outs and special thanks to Amici Trust, Pform.nz, Waterlea PTA, Alfriston School, all our volunteers and of course all our Middle School tamariki and kaiako. Don’t forget to buy your tickets! For more information regarding how to buy tickets and other information, see the flyer below. Tickets are selling fast so don’t miss out!
You will have seen the QR codes displayed around the school to the parent survey. The survey is linked here too and we will email it out again at the end of the week. The board is very keen to get your voice and it doesn’t take very long, so grab a cuppa and please complete the Waterlea Whaanau Survey here. The last day for the survey to be completed is Friday 18 September. Thank you to all who have participated in the survey thus far.

MOSA Inter School Rugby Tournament for Waterlea’s Boys and Girls Teams

Last Wednesday, our boys and girls rugby teams participated in the MOSA interschool rugby competition. All our tamariki played really well and demonstrated our Waterlea MANA values throughout the day.
It was a 10 aside format and games were 15 minutes long. Each team had a mix of wins and losses, there was some great sportsmanship on display as well.
We would like to thank Roi for coming in and coaching the teams and also Jean Batten Primary school for joining their open grade boys with our team so we had enough players on the day.
Thank you to Charles Tomokino and Georgina Robb for coaching our players and for our whaanau who came along and cheered us on – it was a great day!

Moana Jr. – The Middle School Musical
|
|
|
|
|
Our Middle School tamariki have been working hard in their preparation for the Moana Jr. production this week. There are three more shows across Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 September and all of our Year 3 & 4 tamariki will be part of each performance.
We are loving the support of our community with the number of tickets already bought to come along and see the show. It’s important that we outline that our goal with selling tickets is to cover the costs involved with running the show, including external production, licensing, lighting and sound etc.
We also appreciate that this may not be an activity that all whaanau can afford to attend. We have the capacity to provide tickets for anyone who would like to come along, but it would create a financial burden for. If this is you, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Andy Jones ( andy.jones@waterlea.school.nz) and we can arrange tickets for you.

Our attendance rate as a school for the ninth week for Term 3 is at 61%. We will be over the worst of the cold and flu season next term so we can get out attendance rate up again like it was in terms 1 & 2.
As always, please remember to let the office know if your child is going to be away and the reason for the absence. This information will allow us to enter the correct attendance code for your child. You can phone the office on 096364233 or email reception@waterlea.school.nz.
If your child is going away during the school term please email principal@waterlea.school.nz with the details for the absence and the dates your child will be away.

After the school holidays, in the first week of Term 4, we will be holding our Student Led Conferences (SLC). You will remember that we held Teacher Led Conferences at the beginning of Term 3 and this time we involve our tamariki in the learning conversations. The date for SLC is Thursday 15 October and tamariki will go home at 1pm so we can start the conferences at 1.30pm.
SLC are an opportunity for students to lead a conversation about their learning at Waterlea. Each SLC lasts for 25 minutes and the teacher will also be available to answer questions during this time. The SLC start at 2.00pm and finish at 7.10pm and there will be 3-4 conferences happening at the same time within each classroom.
If English is not the language used in your home we invite you to conduct your child’s conference in the language with which you feel most comfortable.
Next week’s newsletter we will have more information about SLC including the online booking information for you so look out for it and get in fast if you have more than one child attending Waterlea. We will also send out information through Seesaw.

South Auckland Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon
The South Auckland Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon will be held on Tuesday 24 November at Mountford Park, Manurewa. Our school has registered for this event, but please note that parents are responsible for entering their child and supporting them with training. It’s a fantastic opportunity for tamariki to give it a go, build confidence, and have fun being active! We will have the school marquee set up so athletes have a central meeting place and can support each other.
You can join the school team by visiting the Weet-Bix TRYathlon website: https://tryathlon.co.nz.
Entry Options
- Splash & Dash – 6 year olds only. Swim and run.
- Individual TRYathlete – 7-15 year olds. Swim, cycle and run.
- Teams of Two – 7-9 year olds (Juniors) and 10-15 year olds (Seniors). One team member does the swim, the other does the cycle, and both do the run.
