Our MCs for the Samoan Language MANA Assembly- Eden & Cornelius

Talofa lava Waterlea Whaanau
What a wonderful celebration we had last Friday at our Samoan Language Week MANA Assembly. Thank you to our staff and Whaanau for your support of our Samoan students during our Samoan cultural celebration and for integrating Samoan language and culture into this week’s learning – it provided a rich and valuable learning experience for all.
The Samoan Language assembly had such a vibrant atmosphere, highlighted by exceptional performances and MC’s. We also appreciated the attendance and performances from our friends from OHS, which further enriched our celebration. Having so many of our Samoan whaanau join over the week supporting our learning in the classrooms and at the celebration assembly was an extra treat – almost as good as all the panikeke we enjoyed!
The photos above is of our Samoan tamariki and kaiako who dressed reflecting the Samoan culture for our assembly and our fantastic MC’s also for the assembly. The photos below are of the Samoan assembly performances – the Sāsā Group, the Ukelele Group accompanying the Year 1 tamariki and students from Onehunga High School.
Have a great week,
Soifua ma ia manuia!

Parking around the school at pickup/drop offs
|
|
|
Firstly, a huge thank you to all our whaanau who park responsibly and legally during morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups. Your cooperation keeps our students safe.
This message is a reminder for the small group of drivers who are not following common driving laws.
Please note the following legal requirements:
Yellow Lines: We place cones out daily as a visual reminder. Parking on yellow lines is illegal.
Driveways: We are increasing the number of cones to stop drivers from blocking local driveways. Parking across or within 1 metre of a driveway is also illegal.
Student Safety: These rules exist to ensure visibility for our walking students and to respect our school neighbours. Some of our neighbours are elderly and have disabilities. Our MANA value of Manaakitanga is for adults as well as our tamariki. Verbally abusing our neighbours when parking over their driveways is not in keeping with our MANA values.
Please park slightly further away and walk if the immediate school parking zones are full. Thank you for putting our children’s safety first. This is particularly important when it is raining.
Sometimes the extra cones do not resolve the issue, and here are a few other strategies the school uses:
Contacting Auckland Transport: our local council parking enforcement team send wardens to visit during peak school hours and issue fines. They are visiting us next Wednesday to support us to park safely and legally.
Community Police: Priscilla Tauleva, our local community police officer recieves any reports of concern regarding parking and CCTV footage sent by our local community. Priscilla is very responsive at following up on these. Her team have been checking our parking behaviour this week in the afternoons.
Main Areas of concern: House Ave, Muir Ave and Ambury Road (sections closest to school)

Celebrations at school
At Waterlea, we have an agreement amongst staff that when a student has a birthday or other special events, we acknowledge the celebration in our classrooms but discourage families from bringing food to share with the rest of the class. The reason behind this is we have many children with dietary requirements and food allergies etc making it too difficult to monitor for staff and parents. We have scheduled times throughout the year where we invite our whaanau to bring in kai for class shared lunches. Thanks for your understanding in this matter and if you have further questions, please have a chat with the classroom teacher.

Under New Zealand guidelines, your child must stay home for at least 48 hours (2 days) after the last episode of vomiting or diarrhoea . This 48-hour rule is strictly enforced by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education to prevent the spread of highly infectious tummy bugs (like norovirus).

MOSA Interschool Netball Day
On the 3rd of June the Waterlea boys netball team went to the netball MOSA tournament. The boys team ended up with a tight 7th out of 16. In one game we absolutely smashed Al-madinah 9-0, you bet we were happy with that. The boys team won 3, tied 2 and lost 2. We had some great intercepts and incredible passing. All of the boys were very proud of where we came.
Israel and Charlie
Year 6 girls, our first game was a bye game so we didn’t get to play so instead we stayed under the covers next to our bags and were talking about our next game. We started walking to our court to warm up but on our way we saw the year 6 boys game so we stopped and started cheering. When we got to the court and did drills and passing, but the ball was so wet that people kept on dropping it and it kept on slipping through peoples fingers. After all the games we were waiting to see if we made it into the semi finals, Linda went to go check on the scoring paper and WE DID!
Skipper and Riley
Year 5 girls, before all the games started we warmed up. We had to do it in the cold and wet. There were puddles everywhere and the water went into all of our shoes. Then we got our bibs on, then the umpire picked someone from our team to do rock, paper, scissors. We won rock, paper, scissors then we got asked if we wanted to start with the ball or to pick what side to shoot at, we picked to start with the ball. When the game finished we went to where all our bags were, to get a snack before we went back to the court to play some more games. In the end it was a really fun day.
