Talofa lava Waterlea Whaanau

Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa and welcome to Samoan Language Week. The theme or focus for this week is E āfua mai mauga tetele manuia o le nu’u – from the high mountains are the blessings of the village.

Language is the lifeline of culture and identity and many of our tamariki can speak and understand Samoan. To acknowledge these children we have changed our closing karakia to be one in Samoan this week and our presentors for assembly will include Samoan greetings and acknowldgements.

But you don’t have to be Samoan to join the celebration. Here are three simple ways to get involved this week:

  • Learn basic greetings: Use Talofa lava – hello and Fa’afetai – thank you.
  • Listen to music: Explore traditional Samoan siva – dance, soundtracks or contemporary artists.
  • Share a meal: Try traditional dishes like sapasui – Samoan chop suey or panipopo- coconut buns.
Please join us this Friday in the David Lange Hall for our Samoan Language Week MANA Assembly at 9.45am. Our Samoan tamariki are welcome to dress reflecting their culture for our assembly.

Have a great week,
Soifua ma ia manuia!
