End of Term 1

Kia ora Whaanau,

On Saturday our wonderful PTA held the Brick Show at Waterlea. It was a fantastic community event with epic displays from All Blocks RLUG. There was delicious baking – thanks to our wonderful school whaanau. We also had a sausage sizzle and a second hand toy and book sale. A number of our Waterlea tamariki entered their own Lego creations in the build competition and their creativity and aumangea was outstanding! Harold the Giraffe made a guest appearance and so many people showed up from our wider community.

Special thanks to Michelle who spent a lot of time and energy making this happen and to all the volunteers who ensured the day ran smoothly.

This week, our Year 1 and 2 tamariki enjoyed a trip to The Dust Palace in Ellerslie to watch their circus show ‘The Ice Cream is Melting!’ Our students had a great time and were sitting wide eyed watching the impressive acrobatics and aerial stunts. By the end of the performance, some of our students were ready to run off and join the circus.

We are looking forward to celebrating our term with a school walk to Ambury Farm – please join us if you can. We will leave at 11am and when we arrive, there will be time for some games before we walk back to school. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us.

We wish all our tamariki and whaanau a happy Easter and school break. At this time we’d also like to acknowledge our Muslim whaanau who celebrated Eid recently. For those of the Muslim faith, Eid comes at the end of Ramadan.

We look forward to seeing you again next term which starts on Monday 20th April. Just a reminder that school starts at 8.50am each day.

Ngaa mihi,

Andrea Jamieson and the Waterlea Team

Staff News

This term, you may have noticed that Whaea Shumin (Room 12) and Whaea Aroha (Room 11) have not been at school. Whaea Shumin has spent this term in China supporting her mum who was very unwell. Her mum recently passed away a few weeks ago and she has extended her stay in China until the end of Term 2. We send our aroha to Whaea Shumin and her whaanau at this very sad time. Whaea Aroha is also on leave as she recovers from an operation she had recently. Whaea’s recovery requires her to be away from school for an extended time but she is keen to pop in from time to time on Fridays for Kapa Haka. We also send aroha to her as she puts her health first. Because of these events we have some changes in our Year 3 team for Term 2. We welcome Melissa Ansin who will be the teacher in Room 11. Melissa is an experienced local teacher who has been teaching in South Auckland. In Room 12, Whaea Josephine will be sharing the teaching in Room 12 with Alayne Miller. Alayne has been teaching at Waterlea this term and has agreed to help cover in Room 12 in Shumin’s absence.

Whaea Aroha and Whaea Shumin are highly valued members of our teaching staff, we miss them and we wish them well at this time. We appreciate and extend our thanks to those who have stepped up to provide cover in their absence.

MOSA Rippa Rugby

Last week, 3 teams of year 5 and 6 boys and girls went to Aorere park to play Rippa Rugby.

After some great coaching by Mr Tomokino we were ready to go. The weather wasn’t great and it rained and rained and rained! All of the teams got to play 2 games before they postponed the rest of the day until sometime later in the year.
In the short time we were there we managed to score some run away tries and have fun in the rain.

Thanks to Mr Tomokino and all our parent helpers.

Attendance

Our attendance rate as a school for the ninth week at school is at 86%. This time last year our attendance rate across the kura was 77% so well done everyone for bumping that rate up! As always, please remember to let the office know if your child is going to be away and the reason for the absence. This information will allow us to enter the correct attendance code for your child. You can phone the office on 096364233 or email reception@waterlea.school.nz.

If your child is going away during the school term please email principal@waterlea.school.nz with the details for the absence and the dates your child will be away.

Keep up the great effort in Term 1 ensuring your children are coming to school each day!
