Kia ora Whaanau,
The senior school’s tamariki, kaiako and whaanau had an early start last Thursday morning because they had to be at school to catch the bus to Goat Island which left at 7.30am. The early start was well worth it because by the time the buses pulled up to Goat Island for a day of snorkelling, everyone was blessed by beautiful sunshine.
This event is the highlight of the whole Mountains to Sea programme and is an opportunity for learning, challenge and fun. Snorkelling in the pristine Marine Reserve is a wonderful experience, and we are extremely lucky to have great whaanau support, meaning we can have one adult snorkelling with every two tamariki.
The day is not only a chance to be in the water, but also to learn about how the cleanliness of the streams flowing into the bay are monitored and supported, and to study the rich and varied rockpool life on the shore. All of this learning will feed into action projects that will be done in class over the next few weeks.
Although we have had to postpone the second group until week 7, due to some weather issues, we are optimistic that everyone will get their chance to visit wonderful Goat Island.
Ngaa mihi,
Andrea Jamieson and the Waterlea Team
